Thousands of people took to the street, Guatemala City on Sunday waving flags as they want the President Alejandro Giammattei resign.
But the new reports claim that protesters set fire to part of Guatemala’s Congress building amid growing demonstrations against the president.
The country reels from back to back over cuts in the 2021 budget, and they have called for Giammattei to veto the budget, as legislators approved at dawn last Wednesday.
However, 99.7 billion quetzals ($12.9bn), the budget increased public debt while cutting funding for healthcare, education, human rights and the justice system, outraging people from students to business leaders in a year marked by the economic crisis of the coronavirus pandemic.
A 25 year old student, Diego Herrera said, Congress allocated more money for their meals and didn’t allocate money to the poor people.
But the clashed with police got about 14 people injured and over tear gas inhalation, and were been treating at San Juan de Dios General Hospital.
Twenty-two people were arrested, a court spokesman said.
